Swatantrata Diwas means Independence Day and India celebrates its 59th Independence Day today. India got its freedom from the British rule in 1947. This is Indian National flag: –
The Indian National Anthem, “Jana Gana Mana”, was written by Rabindranath Tagore. The Indian Government provides the Anthem along with audio file and the meaning at India Image.
Wikipedia has done a feature on Indian Independence Day.
Another interesting fact that I was told yesterday by Sayan was that Louis Mountbatten, 1st Earl Mountbatten of Burma, who was send to India to work out the handing over the power, declared 15th August, 1947 as the date for handing over the power to India without much thought when asked in a meeting. He later justified this by stating that it was the date when Allied forces won the WW II.
I could not verify the first fact but the date of Indian Independence is indeed the date Korea became independent and Japan surrendered in 1945. Here the link.
I have posted this post on another blog, Indiyeah
