The war is out in the open. Last year US refused to share ICANN and the root domain name servers with rest of the world. Now China has responded with coming out with its own domain. Users of the Chinese domains won’t have to route through the ICANN controlled servers thus creating a parallel internet.
The problem is that this could split the internet up and issues of interoperability between internets managed by different organizations. Soon you could have other countries coming up with their own domain names.
Interesting issue to wait & watch!
