Kiva: I just reached 50 loans :))

As I have posted earlier, I been lending through Kiva.org for about 2.5 years now. Recently, I reached a landmark of 50 loans. These are some of the stats. There are more stats and info if you are interested @ http://www.kiva.org/lender/vidur3752

The interesting things to me are:

I have no defaults till date and
I have been able to use a small some of money and reinvest it multiple times
I have loaned to folks all over the world

Kiva: The money multiplier effect

It has almost been a year since I started lending at Kiva.org and it would be fair to say I can come a long way. The most interesting change that Kiva folks made during this time is that instead of crediting the loan repayments to lender’s account at the end of loan term, they do it as the repayments come-in. This has had a real money multiplier effect. Let me explain.

I funded my Kiva account with $500 last May. Of this, I have donated $55 to Kiva. And I have made loans worth $800 which as almost twice my investment and all this in less than a year I hope I am doing my part in helping the global economy.

I have made 22 loans till date out of which 2 have been repaid and no defaults. My Kiva page (link) has more info. I encourage everyone to explore micro-lending, as a lender and/or loan seeked. I believe it is way of helping people becoming self-sufficient and conribute to the society.

Pharmacy in Uganda and cakes from Peru

Nelida Adriana Diaz Pretel has a small bakery in Trujillo – La Libertad, Peru where she bakes cakes from local grocery stores and for birthdays & parties. She has requested a loan of $175 for 4 months to buy more ingredients for her cakes. 6 kiva lenders contributed to here loan.

Bukaye B North a Group is a group of 6 women from Iganga, Uganda running different stores. They have raised $1,550 with contributions from 39 kiva lenders. The loan will be returned in 12 months. This link has more details about this loan.

Restaurant on the beach in Carabane

GIE Casa Mas Group has raised a loan of $1,675 to start a restaurant on the beach in Carabane, Senegal. Their village is in the tourism zone and transit point for Spanish tourists. You can read more about the loan @ Kiva.org.

The loan will be returned in 12 months and 60 Kiva member contributed towards the loan.

Need a taxi in Beylagan?

If you do, I would recommend Emin Muradov. He drives a self-owned taxi in Beylagan, Azerbaijan. He supports his wife and 2 kids with this income.

Emin had requested for a loan of $1,200 to buy spare parts for the taxi. He intends to pay back in 12 months and 30 Kiva members has contributed towards the amount.

Also, 3 of the loans that I have made have been disbursed. I hope they serve the help cause for which they were taken. My best to all the micro-entrepreneurs.

Kiva: Where is mera desh, India?

While I was looking for projects to lend to, I realized that there where no loan requests from India. I dug a little and Kiva doesn’t even have a ‘Field Partner’ there. The second most populous country, with a significant percentage of population below the poverty line, missing was bit of a surprise to me.

So, I dug up a little more and it looks like India already has a number of local Institutions, both public and private, involved in Micro-finance. I found this link on the Global Development Research Center site. It is a collection of links, including reports on micro-finance in India, institutions, etc.

I will read a bit more and blog about this again.

Meet Ilgar from Bilasuvar, Azerbaijan

On May 19, 2008 I contributed towards the loan request from Ilgar Quliyev along with 36 other Kiva lenders. Ilgar has a shop and he has borrowed money to increase the inventory. He supports his wife and their 2 children. The loan amount is $1,200 and duration is 18 months.

This also marks a change in the way I select loans. This is first loan I selected by using the ‘amount left’ methodology. Well, no rocket science! I sort the loans by least amount left first & then select a loan from among the top 10 listings. In fact, in this particular case I was the last person to make a contribution.

Juana’s grocery store

Before you wonder how many loans I plan to make, a quick note; I have added a fixed amount to my Kiva account. I will make loans till I run out of the Kiva balance. As the loan is re-payed, I will re-loan.

Juana Perdomo Puello of San Cristobal, Dominican Republic wanted a loan of $450 so she can stock-up on the inventory for her grocery store. She plans of growing her business so it can service her entire neighborhood.

She has promised to repay the loan in 6 months. A total of 14 Kiva lenders contributed towards this loan.

Batuli’s shop in Tanzania

The second loan I made on Kiva.org was to Batuli’s Majengo north Group in Tanga, Tanzania. This is my first group loan. To learn more about group loans click here.

The group has 3 members: Batuli, Zaina and Mwanahija. They sell shoes, clothes and bags at their respective businesses. The loan will enable the group members to buy more merchandise which should help boost profits.

The total loan amount is $375 and 10 Kiva lenders contributed. The group has promised to pay back the amount in 10 months.

My first loan

Recently, I wrote about Kiva.org. I am now a proud lender to 5 micro-enterprises. I want to share my loan making experiences with all. So, here is some information about my first loan.

The loan was made to Habil Aliyev who lives in Baku, Azerbaijan. He buys old cars, which fixes then sells. He has taken a loan of $500 which he will use to buy spares for a car he is working on and promises to pay back in 10 months. A total of 19 Kiva lenders contributed towards his loan.
